“We’re looking forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday, September 3 at 8:15 a.m.,” District Superintendent Jeff Koenig said of the coming school year.
With nine new teachers on staff when school opens Tuesday, Sept. 3, Stanley-Boyd students will have a remodeled upper elementary to get used to.
Debuted to the public Aug. 26 in an Open House, the newly remodeled upper elementary paid for with Fund 46 savings has larger classrooms, improved wall insulation, larger hallways, and new flooring—just to name a few.
With classrooms now sized at 900 square feet, the upper elementary features 10 foot wide hallways leading from the north that expand to 13 feet near the ceiling, while the south hallway is 15 feet wide and expands to 19 feet with class doors. New windows let in light from the hallway, and a new art room stands ready to receive students Sept. 3. So what are some initial reviews?
“I didn’t even know where I was,” retired Stanley-Boyd teacher Gary Krueger said of the difference. “Absolutely gorgeous….they did a good job.”
His wife Edith Krueger (also a retired educator) was equally impressed.
“The classroom floor was very soft compared to walking on cement,” she said of the changes.
Coming in at approximately half its estimated price tag, the $2.115 million renovation approved in November 2023 was designed by LHB Architects of Superior and constructed by Dell Construction.
Overseen in its construction by CESA 10, the new remodel includes new intervention spaces, restructured interior walls, new radiant heat panels, fire safety and egress updates, updated LED lighting, safety and security measures, along with new interior Transom windows and new flooring.
Also included in the remodel are updates to ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) and Code standards, as well as updated energy efficient controls as well as doors and furnishings. New cubbies from Wisconsin Bench were also a highlight of the tour.
Following the open house Monday it was to the library, where the school board held its regular board meeting beginning at 7 p.m.
Starting with presentations by the Student Council and FCCLA, the board moved into enrollment, where it was projected that a two pupil difference would be noted when the official count takes place the third Friday in September. Revenue being enrollment based, a two pupil difference is considered to be holding steady in the three year rolling enrollment average that helps determine district finances.
As for the state budget and its impact on education, revenue per pupil is expected to go from $11,000 to $11,325 this year, meaning an additional $314,618 in state aid for the district if fully utilized. Back at the tour, local investment in student education, was clear.
