Lions make first payment on library addition and renovation pledge

Meeting on Monday, September 9, the Stanley Lions reviewed their August projects and planned ahead the next several months of activities. A letter from the Community Foundation of Chippewa County noted receipt of $5,357.30, which included the Lions first payment of $5,000 on their pledge of support to the D. R. Moon Library renovation and addition project. Also donated was the $357.30 from the Concertina Concert fundraiser held on August 31, at the Stanley Community Center. It was noted that the Lions received a thank you note from the library for their assistance with the Launch Campaign that was held on July 31. Lions members prepared and served the food to the attendees.
President Laurie Foster called on Lion Dave Winkler who provided a report on the Lions Deer Hide Collection during the 2023 hunt. Stanley and Boyd area hunters donated hides resulted in $2,231 going to the Lions Foundation which operates the Lions Camp at Rosholt. Lions Camp serves children with sight difficulties, diabetes and mental challenges at no cost. Statewide donated deer hides sold for $121,071 in 2023. In the 35 years, this project has been taking place annually, $1,640,600 has been donated to the Lions Foundation for operation of Camp Rosholt.
In a report on the Appreciation Party, held at the August 12 Meeting, Lion Jerry and Mary Dirkes were acknowledged for preparation of the food. Lion President Foster thanked all the Lions and volunteers who assisted with the Watermelon Festival.
In new business, it was announced that Elementary School Vision Screening is being planned for the first part of November, the Sunset Homes Brat Supper and Bingo will take place on Monday, October 28, and the 4th Annual Halloween Trunk and Treat will be held at Chapman Park on Saturday, October 26, from 9 am to 12 pm. Lion John Pozdell is chairing this event. It was voted to purchase one or two new Lions Emblems to be placed on the Highway 29 Welcome to Stanley signs at both entrances to our community. Approval was given to go ahead with the 2024 Lions Christmas Raffle.
In closing, it was announced that the next regular meeting of the Stanley Lions Club will be held at Debbie’s On Broadway on Monday, October 14. Debbie and her assistants were applauded for their ongoing provision of good meals for the Lions meetings.
