Friday the 13th—a day and a number that can mean different things to many people.
For Stanley-Boyd, it meant an 18-12 victory against the Mondovi Buffalo, making for an undefeated 4-0 record thus far for Stanley-Boyd. Orioles Head Coach Jeff Koenig shared more on how things had gone after the game.
“Our defense played an outstanding game on Friday,” Koenig said. “Mondovi has been averaging almost 35 points per game on offense and our defense did a great job of slowing them down. We still have a lot to clean up in all phases of the game and need to improve each week.
“A lot of times on offense, it can take a little time to set things up and see what the defense is giving us. Mondovi did a good job of keeping the clock running and limiting our opportunities. We knew we had some things set up early but we didn’t have the possessions to take advantage of it in the first quarter.
“Our team has shown it can be explosive at times and we were able to make some big plays on offense. I tell our team we are an equal opportunity offense, meaning a lot of players are going to get a chance to make a big play. A number of players really stepped up when their number has been called in every game so far this season.”
Closing out the first quarter with no score on either side, the second saw points for Stanley-Boyd after a touchdown pass from Carter Isenberger to Cole Brenner connected for a 31-yard gain to bring the score 6-0 Orioles with 11:53 left in the half, an extra point attempt that followed being unsuccessful.
Just before the half, points were scored again, a run by Isenberger resulting in a one yard gain to bring the score 12-0 Orioles with 18 seconds on the clock, a followup two point conversion pass attempt being unsuccessful.
Coming out of the half into the third quarter, Mondovi scored a touchdown on a four yard gain followed by another touchdown in the fourth to tie the score 12-12. The Orioles broke the tie with 2:51 left on the game clock with a touchdown pass from Isenberger to Brenner for a 25 yard gain and six point lead, a two point conversion pass attempt proving unsuccessful.
With four games down and still more before playoffs, the Orioles play Spectrum at Elk River Minnesota in an away game Friday, Sept. 20. Game start is 7 p.m.
