New solar array coming to Stanley-Boyd Schools

Gym roof delayed until next spring

Stanley-Boyd Area Schools will soon be getting a new solar array.
Approved by the school board in December 2023, the 230 panels capable of generating 540 watts each will be located just north of the practice field off Fourth Avenue, for a collective 124.2 kilowatts of energy. Included with the new panels are 2 x 50 kWh Solectria inverters, allowing for the conversion of direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC). Sinclair SkyRack 2.0 will furnish the mounting for the fixtures. Assisted for payment with two grants for $15,549 Focus on Energy and $24,592 from Solar on Schools as well as $79,549 in federal elective pay, the panels from Solar Connection are expected to have an effective cost of $145,601 after all applicable benefits are applied, with return on investment calculated at 4.1 times the cost.
Donated solar panels will also affect the final numbers, lowering installment cost.
Also in school news from Stanley-Boyd, the roof project now in progress will see corridor roofs completed before winter, but the gym roof held off until next spring. Included in initial construction back in 1960, the gym roof includes stacked layers of insulation that need to be cut out and replaced with brand new roof insulation.
“We told them that if it’s put off until next spring we expect this year’s price,” Superintendent Jeff Koenig said in updating the board.
