Opportunistic thieves take advantage of unlocked car doors

A rash of thefts from vehicles over the weekend has left numerous residents of the Chippewa Valley without their valuables.
Thieves entering through open vehicle doors took valuables in Cadott, Boyd, and Chippewa Falls, the thefts believed to be related.
“There were some vehicles that were entered into,” Stanley Police Chief Lance Weiland said Monday. “Mostly money and personal items. There was one report of a firearm stolen.”
Investigated locally by Officer Andrew Holty of the Stanley PD, the rash of thefts kept law enforcement busy last week.
According to Cadott Police, the suspects were reported as two individuals wearing dark-colored hooded sweatshirts and pants, striking in the morning hours.
Back at Stanley and Boyd, the message is clear.
“The message to put out there to the public is to keep valuables safe, lock vehicles, don’t leave keys,” Stanley Police Chief Lance Weiland said.
As for a vehicle reportedly taken from the north side this past weekend, it was returned. Chief Weiland said he knew a picture was circulating but couldn’t confirm details. No one was arrested or charged for taking the vehicle.
“It was a young kid,” the owner said of not pressing charges. “They returned it and parked it back in the same place,” then adding, “It would have been different if they didn’t bring it back.”
