‘Press Start’ levels up and takes the audience on a virtual adventure

Stanley-Boyd Summer Theater students presented their summer hit ‘Press Play’ for family, friends, summer school students and community members on June 28th. The Friday morning musical performance delighted the audience, drawing quite a few chuckles with its lighthearted approach while immersing audience members into the world of video games.
The premise of the musical began when well-known video game characters called heroes ran out of “lives” and with the help of their sidekicks, put together a fundraiser to help them collect gold rings so they could continue playing. The production also showed the humorous side of the villains of video games and when things hit a snag, an unlikely hero steps up to save the day and showed the characters that all of them have a hero within.
Directed by High School English Teacher Kayleigh Steinmetz and Choir Director Louella Derrico, Stanley-Boyd Summer Theater students from 4th grade through 8th grade showcased their incredible talents with amazing musical numbers, attractive set design and fun, colorful costumes created by high school students who volunteered their time. The hard work of the students paid off as they once again performed the production in a little over two weeks. Steinmetz remarked that the students memorized the dance routines and script quickly. She said that she chose ‘Press Play’ because she knew the students would recognize the video game characters and have fun with the themes. “This year’s summer theater group did a phenomenal job with the performance. From the beginning to the final performance, they gained a lot of confidence in their singing. Those with solos really worked hard to ensure that they were loud enough and singing with the beat.”
Congratulations, Stanley-Boyd Summer Theater students! The Stanley-Boyd community can’t wait to see your next act!
