The Orioles played Turtleback Golf Course at Rice Lake Thursday, Oct. 3. Individual scores were as follows:
Junior Allie Goodman finished with a score of 106
Freshman Vivian Morrow finished with a score of 117
Junior Emily Kletsch finished with a score with of 124
Junior McKaila Simon finished with a score of 132
Sophomore Emily Brenner finished with score of 144
The Orioles finished fourth overall of six teams with a team score of 479.
Goodman’s individual score at Turtleback qualified her to advance to the Sectional at Luck, where she golfed 126. Orioles Head Coach Devon Wenndt shared thoughts after the results.
“I had told you leading up to the Regional that if we played like we did at our Conference Championship at Lake Hallie that we would have a good shot at advancing as a team,” Wenndt said.
“We did play similarly well, and did indeed have a very good chance to move on. At the end of the day, we came up three shots short. It’s a bit heartbreaking to be so close and miss out. We were playing our best team golf of the season, and we were doing it on a very challenging golf course that was presenting a tremendous challenge to all the competitors. Credit to the young ladies from Colfax for taking home the Regional title, as well as the Bloomer and Ladysmith squads for qualifying for this year’s Sectional round in Luck.
“Seeing Allie (Goodman) move through as an individual this year is a testament to her hard work and dedication. She’s a talented player, but battled a bit of inconsistency with the swing this year. Once we were able to get past the busy portion of the season and get a few consecutive practice days under our belt, we were able to sort through some of the trouble spots that I was noticing and her ball striking consistency improved dramatically. She did a great job of managing her game, posted a good round, and not only earned her spot at the Sectional but also put our team in a position where we had a fantastic chance to move on. Things didn’t work out quite the way she wanted them to in Luck, but it was certainly a fantastic learning experience that we will use to grow and put ourselves back in a similar position next year.
“The improvement that this team showed throughout the season is exactly what every coach in any sport wants to see, and I express my deepest thanks both to the young ladies of the S-B golf team as well as to Coach Randy Gustafson for their hard work, dedication, and great attitudes throughout the season. We had a lot of fun together this year, and I look forward to carrying the momentum we built at the end of this season into next year.”
